At the state, you'll find competitive compensation, a robust benefits package and a commitment to work-life balance. Most importantly, you'll have the chance to make a real and measurable impact on the lives of Hoosiers across Indiana. About the DNR Division of Nature Preserves: The Division of Nature Preserves identifies, protects, and manages an array of nature preserves and natural areas in sufficient numbers and sizes to maintain viable examples of all of Indiana's natural communities. We seek to manage and maintain viable populations of endangered, threatened, and extirpated species. We currently support more than 290 dedicated nature preserves that comprise over 53,000 acres. Role Overview: This is a computer-based desk role that will have the opportunity to work out of Downtown Indianapolis (Indiana Government Center South) with parking provided. The position is a combination of data entry into a relational database (Oracle-based), mapping spatial locations of endangered species into the database, reading and extracting scientific information from reports and journal articles to add to the database, and potential for general work within the ArcGIS desktop as well. Salary Statement: The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $12.25/hour but may be commensurate with education or work experience. There is a minimum of 18 hours to a maximum of 37.5 hours per week during the employment period, with relatively flexible scheduling within normal business hours and days. A Day in the Life: Enter data into an online relational database. Distill datasets and extract necessary information on rare species observations. Identify and extract data from journal articles, publications, reports, and datasets. Collaborate with Data Managers and Scientists to ensure accurate representation of species observation and associated data. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time. What You'll Need for Success: Required: Sufficient knowledge in Excel, Access, and related data manipulation programs. Precision in data entry and transfer. Capacity to interact with those in conservation, ecology, natural resources, wildlife, or an associated area. Dependability, flexibility, and attention to detail. Preferred: An interest in conservation, ecology, natural resources, wildlife, or an associated area would be ideal to offer a full understanding of the importance of this work and a motivation to contribute precise data entry. At least one GIS class and a working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS Pro. Familiarity with reading journal articles, publications, reports, and datasets. Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana: This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
