Job Description

The Practice Group Manager will report to the Business Practice Group Chair and serve as an innovative strategic partner and trusted advisor to the Business Group and key stakeholders. This hybrid role, located in Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas or Houston, will drive operational efficiency, strategic execution, and overall growth of the Business Practice Group, ensuring strategic goals are met through cross-functional initiatives; efficient daily operations; and effective communication between internal teams.

Practice Group Manager Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the practice group, ensuring smooth execution of client services, matter management, and internal processes.
  • Assist in the development, execution of strategic initiatives, goals, and long-term plans for the practice group.
  • Collaborate with and assist Business Group Practice Team Leaders with strategic planning, staffing, long-term plans, and other initiatives for each of the Practice Teams within the Business Group.
  • Oversee practice group budget planning and financial operations, including financial performance reporting and expense tracking.
  • Function as a primary point of contact between the Business Practice Group Chair and key stakeholders, including clients, attorneys, administrative staff, and firm leadership.
  • Foster non-partner timekeeper growth and coordinate with talent management efforts.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the practice group’s operational efficiency, such as workflow automation, case management optimization, and resource allocation.
  • Manage and coordinate large-scale projects, including client engagements and new business initiatives. Ensure deadlines are met and resources are efficiently allocated.
  • Produce reports and analytics to build business intelligence, informing leadership on trends related to overall practice management, including talent management, financial performance, knowledge management and business development efforts to help guide decision-making.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination between attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff. Assist with staffing needs, recruitment, and professional development of team members.
  • Prepare presentations, reports, and other communication materials for senior management and clients.

Practice Group Manager Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Legal Studies, or related field; MBA or Advanced Law Degree strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a sophisticated law firm or other professional services environment, working as an attorney or other timekeeper, or manager is required. Experience in Capital Markets, Finance, or Securities and Corporate Governance preferred.
  • Must be able to travel when needed.
  • Deep understanding of current legal market trends and innovations, including relevant legal industry regulations and industry best practices.
  • Professionalism, integrity, proactive leadership, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Financial acumen and experience with budget management, utilization and realization rates, revenue, profitability, and other metrics.
  • Analytical ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to correspond with all levels of business professionals, attorneys, and Firm leadership.
  • Advanced technology proficiency in Windows-based software and Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with a focus on strategic execution and keen attention to detail.
  • Must exhibit high degree of initiative and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • A demonstrated history of collaboration, working at across teams and departments to ensure alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Flexibility and the ability to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and competing deadlines.
